Are Social Applications Taking Over the Internet? Morgan Stanley’s Internet Trends Report

Should Marketers Take Social Media Seriously?

Last evening I attended a panel discussion on sports marketing. The panel was composed of the marketing leaders of the 4 local professional sports teams.

The discussion was insightful and enjoyable with agreement that the creating a community of ticket buyers based on the team brand was vital. As the discussion was wrapping up I realized that no mention had been made of any kind of social media usage as part of their community development -- so I asked the panel -- "What were they doing, or planning to do, to create community using the social media space (YouTube, Facebook, Ning, etc)?" Only 1 of the 4 teams answered that his team was "actively exploring their options and have recently launched a 'beta' to their season ticket holders." Time was short and the moderator moved onto another question -- but I didn't see get the sense that the 3 other panelists were chomping-at-the-bit to pitch their social media plans to the audience.

This morning I came across a Internet Trends March 2008 report from Morgan Stanley that these teams need to read.

Key takeaways from Morgan Stanley’s Internet Trends March 2008 report (as reported by TechCrunch) are:
